I think almost everyone is familiar with the lyrics to the The Proclaimers song 500 miles?

Well that song became a real ear worm for me last week and I’m fairly sure I nearly did walk 500 miles over the course of the week. Three Art Shows in different parts of the Old Truman Brewery meant that I walked miles and miles and miles. The Other Art Fair, Kinetica Art Fair and Contra Art Fair were all part of an alternative satellite to the more corporate and overpriced Freize Art Fair.

“If you feel Frieze has lost its edge, there’s always this younger, hipper artist-led alternative in East London’s Old Truman Brewery.”

Daily Telegraph

So, aside from needing to get my boots re-soled all three events went fantastically well, with glowing reviews in the press and across social media. The many artists I spoke were all delighted with the shows, almost all had made strong sales and had picked up numerous contacts.

Three very different shows:

The Other Art Fair

Some 130 exhibition stands with artists showing a range of different works at affordable prices. The Other Art Fair is more than just an art fair, it’s an experience. With 130 artists, including exclusive work from Polly Morgan, an immersive theatre experience, a bar from CRATE Brewery, A pop-up restaurant from Soho House’s Dirty Burger, a Kids Treasure Hunt and the best coffee in town from Monkshood Cafe. Some 12,000 visitors poured through the doors over the four days that the show was open.

Kinetica Art Fair

A truly submersive experience where the art moves and whirrs, whizzes and flashes. With around 55 artists from across the globe. This is the third time we have worked on this show and it never ceases to amaze and delight. The organisers vision can often be a challenge to put into practice and we have to throw a lots of hours into the second stage of the build to get things right. Rigging points for hanging work, fully enclosed stands with wooden ceilings to cut out any light, raised floors and black painted walls. And cables, miles and miles of cables.

(remember that big blue rotating circle we posted about recently – you’ll be pleased to hear that we didn’t drop it – it looked amazing in the big blue box we built for it)

Contra Art Fair

A brand new show for London introducing young contemporary Turkish artists to a UK audience. A smaller fair, but perfectly formed with a variety of different media. We built some really smart block stands for this show that enclosed the pillars in the room making the floor space look much more open and airy.

So, that was my week last week, walking 500 miles around The Old Truman Brewery.

Next up?

Off The Rails, a brand new menswear shopping experience showcasing some 70 up and coming designers. Can you guess where? Yeah…at The Old Truman Brewery!!
